WALKING

If you love walking in nature, then Madeira is the right place for you.

Only one third of the island has been developed and the rest remains unspoilt. With a Nature Reserve of 15 thousand hectares, and over 3,000 kilometres of levada walks, there is plenty to explore - so pack your walking boots!

The Nature Reserve is an Especially Protected area with respect to the Wild Bird's Directive, and a Place of Community Interest, under the jurisdiction of the Habitats Directive. It has been a European Council Biogenetic Reserve since 1992. It was also included on the UNESCO World Nature Heritage List in December 1999.

The unique levada walks follow alongside the man-made irrigation channels (levadas) which take the mountain water all around the island. There are often waterfalls and tunnels to explore along the way. Protected by the trees, these walks are often shady and cool even on the hottest day.

Walking in the interior of the island, you will find lush vegetation and the remains of an ancient laurel forest, with thousand year old trees. In Spring and Summer, you can enjoy the orchids and many other endemic plants, such as rhodedendron and agapanthus, which grow wild here.

Your host, Tony, is an experienced walker and guide, and can personally accompany you on a levada walk during your stay at Casa Beleza. Alternatively, he can transport you to a particular start point, or arrange for you to join a more organised group walk further afield. There are many levada walks, suitable for all abilities and fitness levels.
